The population in West Valley, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) west of Salt Lake City, has increased from 6,831 in 2011 to 7,856 in 2017.
The countywide growth was the largest of any metro area, surpassing the national average of 866.
The growth in the West Valley area, which includes several towns and the city of Provo, was particularly impressive given the region is mostly farmland and agriculture.
“The average household income is in the low $25,000 range and the median household income has been hovering around $35,000,” said Mark Tackett, a professor at the University of Utah.
The population has more than doubled from 683 in 2000 to more than 1.6 million in 2017, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
In the first two years of this century, West Valley was among the fastest-growing metro areas in the country, Tacketts said.
